Boston Children’s Museum’s Receives Support From The Highland Street Foundation

June 19, 2014
EBT Card Discount Removes Cost Barrier For Low-Income Families
Boston Children’s Museum recently announced that the Highland Street Foundation has committed $25,000 in support of its Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) Card Discount for one year. The Museum’s continuing efforts to remove cost as a barrier recently took a major leap with the Highland Street Foundation’s support.

“We deeply appreciate the Highland Street Foundation’s commitment to our EBT Card Discount program,” said Carole Charnow, President and CEO. “Through this important initiative, the Highland Street Foundation has made it possible for thousands of children and families to enjoy the rich learning experiences provided by our innovative exhibits and programs."

On August 1, 2012, Boston Children’s Museum introduced a program that invites all Massachusetts residents with Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards to show their card to get a discounted $2 per person cash admission. The discount applies for up to four people per card, per visit. The Museum does not process EBT transactions; cash or other payment must be provided for admission. Boston Children’s Museum was the first cultural institution in Massachusetts to introduce this program. Boston Children’s Museum has been fortunate to have the enthusiastic support of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, who recently hosted a webinar for the Museum to explain about its EBT program to 72 fellow museums.

“Boston Children’s Museum is a leader in providing access to low-income families,” said Blake Jordan, Executive Director of the Highland Street Foundation, “and we’re delighted to play a small role in those efforts. We applaud their unwavering commitment to ensure that every child in Massachusetts can participate in the fun and interactive learning that takes place at the Museum.”

Since 2012, Boston Children’s Museum has been sharing the good news about its EBT Admission Program for low-income families and usage is steadily increasing. Many other cultural institutions have seen the wisdom in this easily administered discount program and introduced their own EBT admission program making cultural institutions across New England more accessible than ever to families who formerly may not have attended due to cost. Research proves that low-income families are using the Museum’s EBT Admission Program in increasing numbers: in FY13 the Museum hosted just over 3,000 EBT visits and in FY14 the projected hosting may exceed 5,000 EBT visits.

Boston Children’s Museum is deeply committed to ensuring access to its resources and experiences. The Museum is an invaluable resource in that it provides delightfully interactive arts, science, health and multicultural experiences that engage the whole family. Children ages 0-10 with their adult caregivers explore, discover, and find joyful experiences that instill an appreciation of our world, develop foundational skills, and spark a lifelong love of learning.

In addition to the Highland Street Foundation sponsored EBT Discount, the Museum offers several ways to save. To learn about additional savings, please visit
