Everyday Amazing Daily Happenings


Countdown to Kindergarten
Open daily, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, and Fridays until 9:00 PM
Are you ready for kindergarten? Ride a school bus. Put your belongings in a backpack. Choose an activity that helps you get ready to go to school. Countdown to Kindergarten welcomes children of all ages and adult caregivers to a model classroom with areas for dramatic play, math and science games, reading and writing, and creative arts. Themes rotate daily and include shapes, friends, animals, and colors.

The Japanese House
Take off your shoes and step into an authentic silk merchant's home from Kyoto, Japan. Experience Japanese family life, customs, ceremonies, art, architecture, and seasonal events in this 100-year-old house. Please check the specific hours on the day of your visit.

July & August Activity
京の町家ツアー Special Guided Visits of Kyo-no-Machiya, 15-minute tours of the authentic historic house from Kyoto, Japan, will be offered on busy days during the summer vacation season. Our trained staff will take you through this special house and share the stories of the family who lives in this house when it was located in Kyoto.

KidStage Plays
Check the Museum’s online calendar for specific show times and titles.
This kid-sized performance space introduces children to the wondrous world of performing arts. Professional actors perform short plays and invite visitors to join in. The repertoire of shows features music, dance, and comedy.

Science Playground
Open daily, check the Museum's online calendar for hours.
Explore bubbles, magnets, gravity and other natural phenomena. Examine natural materials like shells and rocks. Activities rotate weekly.

Art Studio
Open daily, check the Museum's online calendar for hours.
Art Studio is a dynamic, hands-on activity space designed to encourage children to explore ideas, artists and art from around the world.

Fishing 101 – Weekdays July 1 - August 23
Monday-Thursday, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Friday 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
No Fishing 101 on July 4 and 5 or August 7, 12, and 16. No morning programming on July 15 and 19.
Outside on the Boardwalk (weather permitting)
Join Save the Harbor Save the Bay to learn how to fish right in the middle of the city!

Martin’s Park – Outdoor adventure and nature play, open daily dawn to dusk
Martin's Park, adjacent to the Museum, is a City of Boston park that honors the youngest victim of the Boston Marathon bombings, Martin Richard. Martin's Park is a symbol of Martin's welcoming and inclusive nature, and a unique outdoor play space created to support outdoor adventure and nature play. The Park, with its many inventive structures, is an inclusive play space offering opportunities for children of all abilities to experience discovery and exploration. Designed to encourage interaction with natural materials including plants, stone, and wood the Park offers the opportunity for rich outdoor play experiences that connect children with nature and with each other.

Mondays

Messy Mondays, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Explore the creative process with a wide assortment of messy materials, like water, mud, paint and more! Activities rotate bi-weekly, and are a fun mess for all ages!

Tuesdays

Stories Aloud, 10:30 AM
Share a toddler-sized story time and activity. Themes change each week, and range from exploring baby sign language to building healthy habits and practicing developing skills.

Drum Circle Bucket Drumming, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Got rhythm? Join our drum circle! Don’t have rhythm? Join our drum circle! Express yourself with different rhythms and percussive sounds in this bucket-drumming workshop.

Wednesdays

Music and Movement, 10:30 AM
Sing along to music that gets all ages moving! Grownups and children join in with drums, tambourines, and other noise-makers. All classes are led by trained music educators from Little Groove.

Kamishibai Storytelling, 12:15 PM
Gather around for Kamishibai storytelling outside of the Japanese House. Kamishibai is a traditional method of storytelling in Japan using a set of story picture cards in a small wooden stage.

Water Wednesdays, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Enjoy outdoor play – use spray bottles to paint a masterpiece, participate in a variety of wet games, or splash on water drums! Warning – you will get wet!

Thursdays

STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) Activities under the Tent, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Join us for hands-on/minds-on activities where you’ll get to think creatively and solve problems as you experience science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) in fun and exciting ways!

Drum Circle Bucket Drumming, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Got rhythm? Join our drum circle! Don’t have rhythm? Join our drum circle! Express yourself with different rhythms and percussive sounds in this bucket-drumming workshop.

Story Time in Countdown to Kindergarten, 11:30 AM
Join the circle for a story! Enjoy songs, puppet play and creative activities based on the story of the day.

STEAM Sprouts, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Explore materials, practice using new tools, or discover something unexpected about the way things work. These STEAM activities are designed to support toddlers’ natural curiosity about the world. Activities change monthly.

Fridays

Asobo – Let’s Play! 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Drop by to play different Japanese games, such as origami, karuta, and kirigami!

Family Yoga, 11:15 AM
Strengthen your muscles and relax your mind and body! Enjoy an energizing yoga session designed for young children and their grown-ups.

Friday Nights

Story Time in Countdown to Kindergarten, (July only) 5:45 PM
Join the circle for a story! Enjoy songs, puppet play, and creative activities based on the story of the day.

Funky Friday, July 12, August 2, 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Join the fun on the first Friday night each month to imagine, create, and wonder! Construct a cardboard creation, make a fantastic fort, or add to a giant tapescape. Play is powerful – come experiment with familiar and unfamiliar materials, and try something new! Programs change each month, check the Museum's online calendar for details.

KidsJam, July 26, August 30, 6:30 – 8:00 PM
Dance the night away at an all ages dance party with a live DJ, dance lesson, free dance, and games galore.

Saturdays

Collaborative Art, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Make some art with friends outside under the tent! Activities include origami, collage, and sidewalk chalk drawing!

Zumba® Kids July 6, August 3, 11:00 and 11:30 AM
Get active and participate in a family friendly Zumba class for kids and grown-ups! Zumba is a fitness program that incorporates many styles of dance, including cumbia, salsa, merengue, reggaeton, and tango.

Critter Day

Seat at the Table with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute
Tuesday, July 2, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Join educators from the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate for a collaborative art workshop to transform a folding chair into a “seat at the table” for kids and families.

Morningstar Access, Thursday, July 4, 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Morningstar Access offers children with special needs the opportunity to visit the Museum when there are only a few other visitors. With a limit of 100 guests, children and their families can explore the Museum with less concern about infections and large crowds. Pre-registration is required.

Be Well Series - Sun Safety, July 13, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
The summer is here, let's play outside! But also be mindful about sun-safety. Enjoy outdoor games, learn about the effect of UV rays, and ask questions about how to be safe in the sun in order to be prepared for all the outdoor summertime fun!

Free Fun Friday sponsored by the Highland Street Foundation
Friday July 19, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Enjoy free admission and explore three floors of interactive exhibits. Outside along the boardwalk play and enjoy lively performances. THE MUSEUM CLOSES AT 5:00 PM. Enjoy an outdoor family dance party with a live DJ, on the boardwalk in front of the Museum from 5:30 - 7:30 PM.

Boston Youth Dance Festival, Sunday, July 21, 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Enjoy dance performances and workshops of all different genres as Boston Children's Museum and Urbanity Dance partner with dance organizations from around Boston to celebrate Boston's diverse dance community.

ORIGAMI Gathering! Wednesday, July 24 1:00-3:00pm
Please join us for a casual “origami” gathering. Pick up a piece of paper and make something!
This program is part of the year-long celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Kyoto/Boston Sister Cities Friendship.

Berklee College of Music Summer Sessions, Thursday, July 25, 1:30 PM
Watch middle school students from Berklee College of Music Day Sessions program present a live performance showcasing their creative talents and encouraging interaction and creativity among children.

Greater Boston Music Outreach, Sunday, July 28, 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM
Two talented high school musicians from Greater Boston Music Outreach come out of the concert hall and into the Museum to perform and lead a special magic and mythology-themed music program!

Wizarding Weekend, Saturday July 27 and Sunday July 28, 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Potions, Quidditch practice, and much more awaits you! Join us for a Wizarding Weekend, as we celebrate our favorite wizard’s birthday. Come dressed in your robes and bring your wand! Don’t have a wand? Worry not, you can make one! Your house needs your support, so join in and help them win the House Cup! Muggles and Wizards alike welcome!

Stuart Little with Wheelock Family Theatre's Teen TYA Touring Ensemble, Monday, July 29 – Wednesday July 31, 11 AM
Wheelock Family Theatre's Teen TYA Touring Ensemble is excited to perform Stuart Little! From the author of Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little follows the many harrowing adventures of a small mouse in New York City. The Teen TYA Touring Ensemble is a two-week program for experienced teen actors interested in deepening their actor's tools in a fast-paced summer program.

Be Well Series - Eye Care, August 24, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Investigate how your eyes work and ways to take good care of them. Explore optical illusions, try eye drop art, and more! Presented in collaboration with the New England School of Optometry.

PlaySpace is closed for the construction of a new space for 0 to 3 year olds and their caregivers. While under renovation, look for special Pop-Up PlaySpace experiences and programs throughout the Museum. Learn more about Pop-Up PlaySpace
