Join us to celebrate the Boston Kyoto Sister Cities 65th Anniversary through Taiko drumming performance, Shishimai lion dance & parade, Shikishi art making, Origami, and many more!
Don’t forget to visit the Japanese House exhibit – an authentic 140-year-old house. It was a very special gift from Kyoto to Boston on the 20th Anniversary of their Sister Cities relationship in 1979.
Activities (Please note that some programs have limited seating available)
- All day – Display of Haiku Expressions about My Family!, by Boston Public School Students & Japan Airline Foundation, the Common (Floor 2)
- 11:00 – Shishimai Lion Dance by Steve Long & Ako Hiratsuka, the Japanese House (3rd floor)
- 12:30 – Taiko Drumming workshop with Odaiko New England, the Common (2nd floor)
- 1:30 – Taiko Drumming Performance by Odaiko New England, the Common (2nd floor)
- 1:50 – Shishimai Lion Dance by Steve Long & Ako Hiratsuka, the Common (2nd floor)

Meet Kintsugi artist Tatsuya “Tad” Murao of Kintsugi Boston and learn about the beauty of Japanese Kintsugi art!
Celebrate Mother’s Day by making something unique out of broken ceramics, sea glasses, and mosaic tiles, inspired by Kintsugi. Kintsugi is a Japanese art of repairing and restoring broken pottery items. Rather than making broken parts look brand-new, Kintsugi sees repaired parts as beautiful and celebrates flaws as something unique to be embraced.
Enjoy the creative process, and then learn to see beauty in broken items.
This workshop is for visitors ages 6+ and their grown-ups. · Very limited seating is available on a first come, first served basis -please sign up in front of the Art Lab.
