Boston Children’s Museum is seeking an individual who values religious literacy as a component of equity, diversity, and inclusion work, and has experience building relationships with people of different cultural, socioeconomic, religious, or spiritual backgrounds, genders, abilities, and interests. The Ideal candidate has strong written communication with a thoughtful approach to generating public messaging, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and knowledge of mainstream and non-dominant religious denominations, principles, and historical context. In addition, understand the ways in which religion and religious institutions have upheld systems of oppression and have had complex influences on lived experiences throughout history.

The Religious Literacy Project Manager (Religious Literacy PM) reports to the Senior Director of the Arts & Culture and is a member of the Arts & Culture team that is responsible for developing and delivering artistic explorations and cultural experiences for all Museum audiences.

The Religious Literacy PM will work in collaboration with the Arts & Culture team to create and support the delivery of child- and family-centered religious literacy programming, including performing arts, culture, and identity-based content, and other educational experiences that reflect the goals and philosophies documented in Boston Children’s Museum’s Learning Framework, which emphasizes play and exploration in service of learning. In addition, the Religious Literacy PM will support the oversight of various exhibits that incorporate overlapping content, coordinate and link their work with team priorities and initiatives, and sometimes across other content teams. Leverage collection materials in service of religious literacy programming and support the Community Engagement team to incorporate the work of external partners and community members who are mission aligned.  The Religious Literacy PM will also contribute their knowledge of religious literacy best practices and religious literacy programming to Museum-wide development efforts.


The Religious Literacy Initiative supports families by providing opportunities to develop a curiosity about how religion is embedded in identity and culture. Through various platforms, including exhibits, programs, object-based learning, and community collaborations. This initiative aims to help children, families, and caregivers feel more comfortable talking about their religious identities and develop skills to practice empathy, toward other people.

The overarching goal of the Religious Literacy Initiative is for children, families, and caregivers, regardless of belief systems and practices, including those with no religious beliefs or affiliation, to feel supported in engaging with topics that affect children’s identity development and well-being. The Religious Literacy Initiative is designed to provide children, and the adults who care for them, opportunities to:

  • Understand how beliefs and values develop as a facet of identity
  • Develop a sense of curiosity and comfort around differing belief systems
  • Celebrate religious, cultural, and familial traditions

Our vision is to establish Boston Children’s Museum as a model for other cultural institutions to center the lived experiences of children and families with diverse identities, beliefs, and religions. We do this through:

  • Generating ongoing learning opportunities about religious literacy from experts in the field, and offering staff professional development
  • Serving as a resource to other museum professionals by sharing materials, and tools, and facilitating convenings
  • Defining new ways of integrating a religious literacy lens across our work, policies, and procedures
  • Work closely with the Senior Director, Arts & Culture to support the Museum’s Religious Literacy initiative vision to lead engaging, educational, and play-based programs and activities for children, families, and caregivers, and to develop Religious Literacy tools for the field. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Identify prospective new partnership opportunities for Religious Literacy programming and contribute to the growth of a network of external advisors
    • Support the refinement of Religious Literacy frameworks for programming, in service of the Museum’s Learning Framework and the Arts & Culture department’s focus areas
    • Plan and execute developmental learning experiences for both internal and external audiences
    • Contribute to budget management and oversight of the initiative
    • Draft and edit programmatic-related documents, inclusive lesson plans, program descriptions, and reports
    • Support iterative testing of activities, including scheduling testing sessions within the Museum and in educational settings outside of the Museum, participating in activities, and reporting on observations
    • Contribute to Religious Literacy program evaluation efforts
    • Serve as the primary liaison for the Harvard Divinity School, one of the Religious Literacy Initiative’s foundational partners
    • Incorporate feedback from colleagues, observations, teachers, students, and evaluation professionals into programming considerations and design
    • Lead ongoing training and mentoring for Educators and Visitor Experience Ambassadors in the delivery of Religious Literacy programming
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within the Arts & Culture team and on other teams within the Programs and Exhibits department, Human Resources, and the EDI steering committee as it relates to influencing internal systems and policies with a Religious Literacy lens
  • Assist with planning and delivery of major team and Museum events, such as programming for school vacation week, summer camp, school programs, and other large-scale celebrations
  • Support day-to-day functionality of exhibit spaces assigned to the Arts & Culture department and ensure a quality visitor experience; develop programming and other educational experiences related to exhibit content
  • Communicate information about Religious Literacy programming to appropriate staff within the Museum, including Visitor Experience staff, and to external audiences (teachers, community partners, etc.)
  • Serve as a Museum liaison to community partners outside of the institution and Religious Literacy related inquiries, building and maintaining strong relationships
  • Other duties as assigned


  •  A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education or related fields; religion, theology and/or public life, social science, history, or cultural studies
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience working in the field of religion/theology and public life, social sciences, cultural studies, Identity Education, Children’s programming, or Interdisciplinary public programming
  • Working Knowledge of current literature and pedagogy around religion and public life, religion and child development, religion and arts and culture, and how these principles impact children, families, and caregivers
  • Understanding of EDI-related and systemic challenges within the arts, cultural, and education sectors
  • Proactive, with the ability to identify and examine challenges and propose creative solutions
  • Strong organizational, logistical planning, and time management skills
  • Experience working with and designing experiences for children ages 0-10, museum educators, or classroom teachers is a plus
  • Ability to coordinate and execute public programming, including but not limited to large-scale events, ongoing activities led by Educators, collaboration with community partners, topical training, and convening
  • Proven ability to drive initiatives and advance program objectives and goals, while strategically navigating complex internal and external processes and dynamics
  • Working knowledge of Boston area community-based organizations and cultural ecosystems is a plus
  • Fluency in a second language is preferred
Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Must be able to sit, talk, write and type frequently; walk, bend, stoop or kneel occasionally; lift, reach overhead, push, or pull up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment: Normal office environment with exposure to typical office equipment and supplies. i.e., desktop computer, multi-line phone, fax, printer, and shredder.  The Office space and Museum exhibits can be a fast-past environment, and occasionally may be loud and noisy during peak seasons.

Other Factors: Must have flexibility with work schedule and hours to support the Museum’s programming and events schedule, holidays, weekends, and or school vacation weeks as required. Some travel for external events, meetings, or training. Some work may be performed remotely as approved by the manager.
