Small Stories: Vignettes in Blue Opens at Boston Children’s Museum
Exhibit Features the Kreger Dollhouse and Dollhouse Furnishings from Across the Museum’s Collection Paired with Cyanotype Photography by Artist Renee Romero
BOSTON, MA—December 6, 2022 — Boston Children’s Museum recently opened Small Stories: Vignettes in Blue. This gallery installation is a special Museum Collections-forward exhibit featuring the Kreger dollhouse and dollhouse furnishings from across the collection paired with cyanotype photography by artist Renee Romero.
Through her photography, Romero invites us to peer inside her own home where she photographs toys strewn about on the floor by her young daughter as if they were carefully planned scenes. These images– rendered in shades of blue which lend to their dream-like quality– are a great example of how photography is not just the practice of creating visually interesting or stunning pictures, but is about telling stories, both real and imagined.
The exhibit also includes interesting objects from the Museum’s Collections hidden inside the Kreger dollhouse– visitors are prompted to peer inside its miniature rooms to look for blue objects in a scavenger hunt. Unique to this art gallery exhibition is that pieces from the collection share equal space with the artwork and provide context and connection in a way that is both familiar and creatively stimulating.
“Like many of us during the COVID-19 Pandemic, artist Renee Romero found herself at home looking at the same toys and domestic spaces day after day searching to gain new perspectives on them and herself,” said Senior Art Educator Sage Brousseau. “Through her photographic practice, she demonstrates that play can be a part of our lives at all ages and stages, from childhood to adulthood, and how our homes and the ordinary objects within it become an endless source of inspiration and conversation across generations.”
Renee Romero is a photographic artist in Brockton, Massachusetts. Her documentary and staged photographic work use a variety of digital, film and alternative processes to tell a personal story of motherhood, relationships, and daily life even throughout changing times and lifestyle shifts like her husband’s military deployments, moves, and her pregnancy.
Small Stories: Vignettes in Blue will be open through February 26, 2023.

Hours and Admission
The Museum is open Monday – Sunday through September 5 with two set daily time slots, 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:30-4:30pm. To reduce touchpoints and enable timed visits, all ticketing will be done online. Members must also make reservations online. There are a limited number of visitor reservations available for each time slot. Adults, $20, children (1-15) and senior citizens, $20; children under 12 months and Museum members are always free.
